So what is the attraction with the MMORPG’s. They are a genre of video games that have really taken off in the last few years most notably World of Warcraft and Everquest. So why the popularity boom I know from my own personal experience from playing star wars galaxies that playing these games give you a real feel of escapism and community. The best way i could describe it was that it was like when you were a kid and you set up some sort of club with your friends. Thats the way you feel sometimes playing these games you have your own phrases and language that all the players within the community of the game use and then depending on your class your class community can have its own phrases and terms that the other community’s dont understand. It’s almost like being in a secret society for some people not admitting in the real world that they actually play the game until they say a phrase that gives them away I think the social element of these games is the main reason that MMORPG’s have gotten so popular. I mean you can go online with friends and work together to complete quests in the game or if you don’t have any friends you can actually go online and make friends in the game to help you with your quests. At the end of the day humans are social creatures so creating games that exploit that is bound to attract a large amount of people.
