Achievement Unlocked!

No doubt if you’re a gamer, you’ll have noticed that a majority of games have achievements these days.

Even if the achievements are not in game, you can find out-of-game achievements for them from services like Steam.

Achievements basically give you a little more incentive to play a game, or to complete certain tasks in a game. In some cases (for example, mass effect) they also reward you with something in game when you complete them. They can range from simple or passive things like killing a certain amount of enemies and completing a level, to harder challenges like playing the game in the hardest mode or or preforming feats that a lot of players may find impossible.

On the subject of achievements; I’ve got two articles which are both pretty funny, I’ll post a few images as examples, then you can click through to the sites that made them. One is about retro gaming and the other is about Team Fortress 2.

First off, let’s cast ourselves way back to consoles like the NES. The time before fancy things like mobile broadband and playstation threes. The NES had it’s fair share of games like Mario, mostly simple. It also had games like Battle Toads which could be furiously annoying at times. However, they didn’t have achievements!

So, what would have those achievements looked like? I’m pretty sure I’d have got the achievement for shoving the cartridge in the wrong way and breaking the machine.

I would never have got this achievement to the left, you can’t deny that watching people fly off that roller coaster wasn’t good fun. It didn’t seem to stop the queues either. Perhaps they should have watched Final Destination a little more closely?

Next up, Team Fortress 2 achievements. The game itself already has 170 achievements, with more being added nearly every update. But I’ve yet to see achievements that anyone could get… and I’ve seen a disturbing amount of people do the things in these achievements(you can find more here):
