The Life Skills That Computer Games Teach

What is a problem? What is an error? For many people problems and errors are obstacles which are in their way and which prevent them from being able to complete certain task. Those people who play computer gamers however tend to look at problems and errors not so much as obstacles as opportunities. Computer games by their very nature regularly put obstacles and traps in the way of the player and players accept that they will regularly face problems which they will need to overcome in order to progress through the rest of the game.

It is this alternative way of looking at problems as opportunities rather than as obstacles which has led many people to believe that playing such computer games actually provides valuable opportunities for computer gamers and video gamers to develop their life skills for the real world, and become people better adapted at dealing with the inevitable flood of obstacles and issues in their way. The argument is that someone who plays a computer game is more likely to look at a problem in their own life, or a mistake that they may have made, as an opportunity to develop, learn, and get it right next time, whereas non gamers are, perhaps, on the whole more likely to simply see an obstacle, and ignore it, or just stop whatever project they’re on, or enlist extra help.

This is, naturally, a gross exaggeration, and there are many people in the world today who are highly successful, and very well suited to the real world and all its problems and obstacles, but who have never touched a computer game. Of course, real life is the best practice one could possibly get for real life, and no matter how realistic and well programmed a computer game is, it is still a mere echo of the world it represents, and the life skills taught and the lessons learnt within that world will, themselves, be an echo of the skills real life will teach you.

However, the essential point to this is that, rather than simply being a leisure activity which wastes time, or is no good except for its own purpose, there is some merit in playing games, and in some cases they may have more to teach us than we currently realise. There are very much two distinct camps discussing this issue – those who are deeply in to playing video games and computer games, and those either opposed to them, or with little interest in them. Many gamers argue the benefits of games, and many non gamers argue that games are a complete waste of time. As with most arguments, both sides have valid truths in their cases, but at the same time, both sides are exaggerating their own case whilst belittling that of the opposing party.

Holiday and relatives... they go hand and hand... right? Here's a little game to help you get through...

OK, so we all have them, that 1 or 2 family members you dread seeing over the holidays.  Let’s name them, and then see below for a fun game to help you get through it:

  • The one who should really only drink one… “I love you all, why can’t we do this more often, I mean seriously, I love you, really I love you guys! Oh, man I love this song!”
  • The one who has more than anyone else, at least that’s what they tell you… “For New Years, I’ll be up at my chalet, what, oh yeah, I bought that the week after I bought my Escalade, oh, I just drive that around town on the weekends!”
  • The one who has another possbile deadly alignment, or is just getting barely made it through one, but most likely it’s both… “Oh, no none for me, I’m just getting over the elephant flu, yeah, it was real touch and go for awhile there, but I’m doing better, well except for my arthiritis I’ve developed in my leg, you didn’t notice my limp, I can barely get around, sometimes I think I’m 85 instead of 35!”
  • The one who has a nickname for everyone, no matter how old you are, you know “Little Peter, Peter, the pumpkin eater… (seriously, I’m like 33 now)
  • The one who loves to tell embarressing stories that happened eons ago… “Remember that time you thought you heard Santa on the roof, and you got so scared you wet the bed”
  • and many more…. what’s yours….

We all have relatives that well, let’s be honest, we are embarressed by, but they are our relatives, and without them the holidays just wouldn’t be the same….

I came across this article or game rather, to help you and your family members get through the rough spots, and I can’t wait to try it out myself!  Have fun, and let me know how it goes!!!

Dante's Inferno Demo for PS3

I downloaded the massive 1+ GB demo for this game yesterday not knowing what to expect.  God of War meets Devil May Cry awesomeness at it’s finest.  It’s based on the medieval epic poem The Divine Comedy [read it here].  The graphics are amazing and even though there is a lot of button mashing, it’s not as painful of a feat as you would fine in the older Dynasty Warriors game.  The upgrade system gives a little more variety than GoW and DMC adding a bit of an RPG type of element to the game.  It’s amazing… everything is incorporating RPG elements now.

Play The Basebll Math Game The Right Way!

“Take Me to The Ball Game…” I love this song, how about you?

“Eye on the Ball.”

“Focus on the Batter!”

“Good swing, honey!”

“Run, steal the base!”

“Shake it off, Sweetie!”

“Come on, You Can Do it!”

Are you familiar with these comments?

I know this because I have been watching my kids’ baseball games in the past five years, I love baseball!

Math is in every baseball game, for each player, there is a matter of number of balls, and number of strikes each time he bats, plus number of bases he has advanced, it is on record. For each team, these is a matter of number of innings, number of scores made by each player, plus the order of batting, are you the first one to bat or the last one to bat?

Baseball math is meaningful if and only if it is for temporary facts, not for madness or frictions!

Results do not matter! Your involvements, the progress you have made via practices and competitions, the experiences you have gained in the game matter!

Never mind who batted first, who batted last! Math is for record, not for boasting or upsetting! You don’t need to be the fastest runner to hit a home run, you don’t have to be the tallest guy in your team to get out a batter from your opponent team, and you never need to become a pitcher to get center attentions from the crowds!

Baseball is fun because it is a game of democracy,  you have an equal opportunity to stand in front of the fans and get your batting done, you gain team player skills and upgrade your world views through the game itself!

I love baseball, I love the ball game song, and I wish you the best on the games you have to play!

Play your share

Be fair

That’s what you shall care

When the game is over

No despair!

Go, game players,

Run the bases,

Say your prayers,

Seize the power of faith and confidences,

Make the world series!

Consider life as a baseball game, we do math, we don’t go down with losing scores, if we can do it this way, baseball math is going to be fun to play to pass the day!

Here is a link which leads you to do baseball math in No harm’s way!

Enjoy The Best Day by Playing Baseball Math Game The Right Way!

Big update

A lot of development has happened since my last post.
I’ve posted a couple of youtube videos charting the progress:

early:

later:

I’m drawing nearly everything with textured quads, it seems the best way to go. It kinda suits this game more because of the mechanical nature of it. I guess if I had more “organic” characters, sprites would be a better fit.
I’ve just finished an asset manager for textures. I’ve got to expand it for fonts and levels as well. I’m planning on beefing up the explosions, making them procedural. I don’t know if that will happen before Christmas. It’d be good, but I doubt it.

Design is a process.

Hello everyone!

Just wanted to give you all a small update. Redesigning a game and its mechanics. Takes time! We feelt that the battle system was completle wrong for what we wanted to achieve, it wasent a system were you’re actions would give consequences. Basicly you attacked with what you had, and that was it.
The game is also board oriented, which gives us a WHOLE NEW world to explore gaming wise. What can we do the board, should it be used in more ways then before, are certain cards now not needed?

As you may understand this takes time. We have a few great ideas in storage, we just need to figure out what works best for URGE. We still want it to focus on beeing a card game so that will still be in there. So updates will be coming now and then with new rules and game ideas.

Until next time URGE fans.

Still a Geek

After learning Game, familiarising myself with how it all works and whatever, I still desire pretty much the same girls I used to desire.

Before knowing Game, I wasn’t terrible with women; I had somewhat of an intuitive grasp of asshole-Game (when I was just seventeen, a relationship even started with a girl texting to tell me specifically how much of an asshole I am and how much I piss her off; she eventually left me for a physically abusive Alpha), although my proficiency was drastically declining over my nineteenth year; I was a beta defeatist, blaming it all on women. So before I knew about Game, I had some success attracting the girls I liked. Not always, but often enough. I have also always been helped along by looks; I’m reasonable looking. (As far as skinny white guys go.) I feel weird saying that, but it seems to be the case.

I had assumed that guys who learn The Art would be smarter guys, and thus deeper. I thought this 1) because they are smart enough to understand it, and 2) because higher intelligence when unguided is a bane to seduction. These points are true, but I’ve learned as I’ve gone on that intelligence does not necessarily entail depth. Thus I was surprised to see that these guys who learned game seem to enjoy clubs, desire shallow socialite women; basically the chick version of douchebags. Just look at this picture of Mehow:

The only thing more repulsive about this picture than Mehow’s bowling-ball forehead and ghastly complexion (testament to the power of game) is the whore he’s standing with. YUCK.

Working in a hip restaurant with a bar, I work with conventionally hot girls. To me, they are unattractive. They are so vapid. I’m not sure if there’s a genetic correlation between hotness and dullness, or if they just become accustomed to exerting less effort in cultivating personalities since they don’t really need to. Either way, looks get old fast.

Basically what I like is what I always liked: natural looking (i.e. can get by without makeup), introverted, book-reading, long friendship forming, no daddy-problems, opposed to groups girls.

It’s just surprising to me how these guys can be interested in mannequins. I remember Mystery saying his favourite women are models and bartenders because they have been selected precisely for their physical beauty. That, I think, is revealing; like Neil Strauss says in the game (and Savoy says in Magic Bullets), many pickup artists practice it in an attempt to fill a giant void in their soul. Liking these sorts of girls is begging for validation from simply…convention.

No thanks.

    Amazon.com Product Description
    Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person tactical shooter and the sixth entry in the popular Call of Duty series. True to its name and following the lead of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it places players in modern combat settings, as opposed to the WWII environments of the earlier Call of Duty games. This modern approach brings with it new weapons, action and options. Coupled with a variety of gameplay modes including single player, multiplayer and the co-op Special Ops Mode, it is destined to be one of the most popular games of 2009 and a worthy addition to the Call of Duty series. .caption { font-family: Verdana, Helvetica neue, Arial, serif; font-size: 10px; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic; } ul.indent { list-style: inside disc; text-indent: -15px; } table.callout { font-family: verdana; font-size: 11px; line-height: 1. 3em; } td.vgoverview { height: 125px; background: #9DC4D8 url(http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/callout-bg.png) repeat-x; border-left: 1px solid #999999; border-right: 1px solid #999999; padding-left: 20px; padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px; width: 250px; font-family: verdana; font-size: 12px; }

    Story
The storyline of Modern Warfare 2 picks up where the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare left off. The ultranationalist Russian leader Zakhaev has been eliminated, but it seems that his lieutenant, Vladimir Makarov, is an even bigger danger. Having made a successful play for power, Intel indicates that he is extending the reach of his influence well beyond the borders of Mother Russia, causing a stir in the international community and prompting the involvement of Task Force 141. Task Force 141 is an elite multinational unit made up of Navy Seals, Delta Force operatives, British SAS and CIA. In the single player campaign you are Sergeant Gary “Roach” Sanderson, with the hero of Call of Duty 4, “Soap” MacTavish, promoted to Captain, making an appearance as an NPC (non-player character) and your commanding officer. The elimination of Makarov and his underlings at any cost is your number one priority, regardless where the fight occurs.

    Gameplay
The latest release in arguably the most successful tactical first-person shooter franchise of all-time, gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 follows the same winning and time-tested structure of earlier games in the series. In the single player campaign players are aided by AI squad members as they take on a series of missions aimed at eliminating Ultranationalist forces. Each mission is built around a particular objective, with players utilizing some level of guidance from NPC characters, including “Soap” MacTavish, and aided in navigation by the game’s heads up display (HUD). Along the way players will be able to utilize a wide variety of weaponry and and vehicles, as well as be able to customize weapons with gadgets attached to them.

Also, just as in previous games in the series, Modern Warfare 2 is heavily focused on multiplayer gameplay. The different multiplayer modes, available both in local play and online, contain plenty of customization options and revolve around different strategies ranging from the every man for himself action of “Free-for All,” the classic team-based fun of “Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of “Search and Destroy,” just to name a few. Multiplayer modes also feature the “Perk” System that players may be familiar with from earlier in the franchise. Through this system players gain additional abilities, weapons and benefits as they gain experience in combat. This can be done by leveling up, but another important way way is through “kill streaks,” the number of enemies eliminated in succession. These are available beginning with three kills and include the ability to call for supply drops, predator missile strikes, helicopter gunships and many more. Players have the ability to customize in advance which perks will be available at each number and can even gauge their progress towards each at the touch of a button. With an eye towards not making the game too hard for new players the game also features help to players experiencing “death streaks,” multiple consecutive deaths in multiplayer matches.

    Special Ops Co-op Mode
Along with a single player mode and multiple multiplayer modes, Modern Warfare 2 also features an unique third main play option, Special Ops Mode. Available both online and in local play, Special Ops Mode is designed to provide a distinct time-based play option, featuring special scenarios not found in other modes in the game and lots of enemies to take on. This mode can be played either alone or with a friend, again either locally or online, with local co-op play including split-screen functionality.

    Key Game Features

    • Challenging Multiplayer Modes – Modern Warfare 2 will contain a wealth of multiplayer modes including: the every man for himself action of “Free-for All,” the classic team-based fun of “Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of “Search and Destroy.”
    • Improved AI Enemies – Improved artificial intelligence now allows enemies to attack from virtually any direction as players respawn into the game adding additional challenges.
    • An All-new Call of Duty Adventure – Modern Warfare 2 features an all new Call of Duty storyline revolving around the continuing struggles against the Russian rebel group the Ultranationalists, who have found a new and more dangerous leader.
    • The ‘Special Ops’ Optional Co-op Mode – “Special Ops” Mode allows two players, either alone or with a friend, to engage in unique mission play and features split-screen functionality.
    • Diverse In-game Environments – Battlegrounds traversed in the game range from the lonely, snow-clad mountains of Kazakhstan, to dark tunnels in the Afghanistan and the crowded slums of Rio.
    • Nonstop Action – Modern Warfare 2 contains no cutscenes, so players are always engaged in the action, no matter where they are in the game.

I got this game a few days ago and after almost 20+ hours of play, simply put: I’d like my money back. Lemme’ break this one down for you:

The Campaign: Why even bother including this. If you have any interest in the campaign mode (as i did), dont waste your time. Same short run and gun, all over the place plot as any other COD game. However, this one really has no substance to it at all. I play on what most would consider to be top of line equipment andd as large and clear as my tv is, half the time I had no idea who was friendly and who wasn’t. There are some pretty cool locations and missions but you wont be in them long enough to really enjoy them. Cover system really sucks as you are safe no where. Seriously, I’ve pulled more spin moves to avoid getting hit than Adrian Peterson.

Multiplayer (online): Fun for a few minutes. I get bored with these frag-fest shooter games but hey, millions of fan boys can’t be wrong right… LIterally, I ran around for 10 minutes and either got stabbed or found a grenade wizzing by my head and never even got a chance to pull the trigger. Then i just randomly hurled grenades in the air and like magic got 15 kills. YAWN!!!! I had way more fun with the offline multiplayer at home with some friends.

Sound: Sounds actually not bad. Guns are a little off from the real stuff but thats not such a big thing to me.

Graphics: OK..at most. Choppy looking trees and such and everything still has the “wet shiny” look. Fan boys will say that it looks amazing, I invite them to play Uncharted 2 and truly be amazed.

Bottom Line: I had really high hopes being a big fan of the series but this one just didn’t do it for me. Because of the lack of realism here and crazy all over the place run and gun style, I’ll take Rainbow Six Vegas or Flash Point any day.

Where else can $60 buy you hours, maybe days of addictive entertainment? You have to watch yourself or risk spending too much time at this game. I have no complaints, only accolades. The game gets better each time especially the multi-player mode.

5 out of 5 starsA game worth getting   December 13, 2009

This game was assume as the one before it, I played call of duty 4 Modern Warfare and to say the graphics in this game was just as great as the previous one, the story mode was very nice with a spin on the ending which I wasn’t expecting. As always there’s the different levels of difficulty to play the game which wasn’t so bad. You also have special ops you can play with a friend at one, online or you can go at it solo. And last but not lest the multi player is the best part of the game as always but they added call signs and emblems to unlock as you complete the challenges, you also have the kill streak rewards. This game is great and I recommend you get it.

They added more weapons, new technology, and a lot more close air support assets from modern warfare 1. Both are great games, but this one keeps all that was good about modern warfare 1 and adds to it! 5 stars without hesitation.

New guns, new customization options for online play, good maps, and a coop mode that’s pretty sweet too! The only thing I would’ve liked was a longer single-player campaign mode, it took 6 or 7 hours to finish, but I guess that’s typical of shooters. Played through on veteran the second time, and liked it a little better.

Overall, the game is excellent – buy it!

    Treasure Hunt

When Rockhopper arrived he brought his new game Treasure Hunt with him. This game is only hear as long as the ship is docked. You can find this game by going to The Beach, going below deck in The Migrator and then going into the next room. You will see sandboxes set up to play the game.

You will need to find a sandbox that is empty or only has one person sitting at it to play. Just keep clicking until you get one. It will ask you if you want to play and then load a game. If the sandbox is full you will be watching someone else’s game instead of playing.

Two penguins team up to uncover the board. One can only dig in rows and the other can only dig in columns. They alternate and each get to dig 6 times in total. After a row or column has been dug up it will show sparkles where there is treasure. The other person needs to uncover the same square from their direction to reveal the treasure.

If you find a green ornament you get 100 bonus coins! I found that on average if you don’t find an ornamnent you make 55-60 coins per game once you get the hang of it.

    [Review] King's Bounty: Armored Princess

Following a lengthy apparent absence, I’ve returned with a spanking new review of King’s Bounty: Armored Princess. This game, like its predecessor King’s Bounty: The Legend, would probably have eluded most of your game-detection radars, given that neither the franchise nor the developer is very well-known. However, that does not prevent the 2 games from being fun and rewarding to play.

King’s Bounty: Armored Princess can be described of as similar to the Heroes of Might and Magic games in terms of combat and exploration. However, unlike those games, KB:AP removes the empire-building aspect of gameplay and replaces it with a richer RPG experience, complete with a lengthy main quest and a bevy of side-quests. It also provides an extensive selection of troops and spells to choose from, allowing players to field an array of different strategies and tactics to deal with different battles. So, how does KB:AP stand up to closer scrutiny?

    Good Points

+ Lengthy Gameplay – A game that provides enough quests to require more than a week of my time is certainly considered lengthy, given my decidedly awe-inspiring gaming credentials. As was mentioned above, a plethora of quests exist in the game, so that you may fully satiate your thirst for mission-completion.

+ Wide Range of Tactics – Having many different troops, some of which are weak or strong against certain attacks, expand the tactical possibilities available to you. For example, you might not employ fire spiders in a battle against dragons, but instead include the dragon-slaying knight in your army in a stunning display of strategic brilliance. Rounding out the package are the standard spells of healing, haste, stoneskin, etc, all of which allow a tactical genius to manipulate the battlefield to his advantage.

+ Simple Game Mechanics – For a game of such scope, it is good to see that the mechanics are simple and intuitive. The optional tutorial is brief but comprehensive, covering the simple but essential points of the game. Seasoned players of the Heroes of Might and Magic games will feel right at home here.

+ Princess Amelie – I think Princess Amelie, as depicted in the main menu image, is hot. ‘Nuff said.

    Neutral Points

= Static Difficulty – Most people would prefer that the difficulty of a particular foe remain static throughout the game. It gives player a sense of growth when you see an enemy described as “lethal” now, but come back 10 levels later and see the same enemy described as “weak”. However, because some main quest battles are fiendishly difficult, static difficulty might mean that you become unable to progress in the game.

= Difficult Bosses – Surprise! This game contains boss fights! And goodness, are the bosses difficult! While it is possible to defeat many of the common enemies roaming around the map without suffering any troop losses, it is possible to get your entire army wiped out when fighting bosses. This is, of course, a fitting behavior for bosses, but the stunningly large variance in difficulty might turn off some players.

= Stealthily Weak Story – At the risk of being flamed for revealing spoilers, I’ll directly say that the main quest is a glorified fetch quest. However, it’s hidden behind various plot points and, coupled with the distraction caused by the substantial amount of side-quests, it’s not likely that this fact will bother you, unless you’re exceptionally particular about the quality of your main quest.

= Wandering Enemies – Enemy troops follow a set patrol path on the game map, allowing you to exploit this feature to sneak past some of them and get at the shiny treasure beyond. However, they also have an aggro range, and some will pursue you if you happen to enter this range. It is, of course, possible to outrun and even outwit their rudimentary AI by juking them, but in my opinion, stationary enemies like those in Heroes of Might and Magic would have been fine.

= Spotty Combat Pathfinding – The pathfinding for your units on the battlefield is disappointingly sub-par, and letting the AI do the pathfinding for you can sometimes result in irretrievable catasthrophe. While the pathfinding will maximise the damage dealt by, say, horsemen, it will usually choose a poor path for the Red Dragon to traverse on it’s Fire Flood ability. Furthermore, there is an aggravating tendency for your own troops to obtusely step on your own traps, making careful micromanagement of the pathfinding a necessary skill to possess.

    Bad Points

    - Tedious – The game threatens to descend into the dark pit of tedium quite a few times. This fact becomes exceptionally apparent when your army grows strong enough to steamroll all common opposition in just the first turn of combat. Even though we know that this is done in the name of leveling up to gain an even larger advantage over opponents, it does not make it any easier. Veterans of grindfests should have no problems dealing with this, but for other players, it is important to note that grinding is extra crucial in this game, and you’ll see why in the next point.

    - Dead-End – It is possible to play yourself into a dead end due to certain poor choices made at any point during the game. Whether or not the problem exists between the keyboard and chair is of little consequence; a poor choice at the start should not lead to an impasse later in the game. Factors which might cause this to happen range from not grinding the bonus-bestowing achievements, to losing too many troops and running out of money or troops to hire. When this happens, you’ll swiftly discover that all remaining enemies are out of your league. With no available means to close that gap, you will find that you have effectively played yourself into a dead end.

It would appear that, despite certain good features, the possibility of a game-breaking event happening is a very serious flaw. However, by making careful choices and making the correct moves, it becomes easier to stave off this horrific event, allowing the positive aspects of the game to shine through. If you have some time to spare and you liked Heroes of Might and Magic, definitely give King’s Bounty: Armored Princess a try.

Finally, as an omake for the anime-watchers, do take some time to check out this moderately humorous webpage(Slightly NSFW).

    moral banking

    My moral accounts are logged,
keeping track of all the good deeds i do,
and should my public image be shaken,
how strong are my efforts to prove my wholesome stuff–
i even confess to display my love,
a profession to shine my image up.

Let my audience chuckle at my silly antics,
    superstitious do-gooding,
for as soon as i’ve built a credit in the bank,
my self-judged low desires are apparently permitted–
even to turn away from love,
even to throw away the best thing in the world.

    This evil game i play,
such a dark sport that runs quick in the shadows,
and here i am furiously rubbing sticks together for sparks,
    that with my fires lit,
    torch burning,
    i ponder this paradox–
    such awareness my forgiveness seed,
    to grow acceptance,
    the birth of compassion.

Hock Doong and Xinwen reviewing the game of “Shi Hong VS Haidar” ↑

Xinwen said that everyone looks for a miracle in the game of Go when they know that they are losing. One way to enjoy Go is the enjoy playing ‘Fuse’, it could help to turn the table of the game. Enjoy every phase, ‘joseki’ in the early game, ‘moyo’ in the mid game and ‘fuse’ near the end game.
